The Founder’s Mindset

It is weird to say this but I haven’t spoken to large corporate people for a long time until recently. And the interactions between me and corporate people make me realize how far I have gone in the past a few years. I have completely transformed from a diligent corporate employee to a start-up founder. And the biggest difference is that now I have the founder mindset. Here are a few things.

Wealth Creation vs. wealth redistribution
Founders create new wealth while most people seek more wealth allocation. Continued wealth creation is the cornerstone of a harmonious society. Everyone gets more as the pie grows bigger. On the contrary, wealth redistribution is problematic when there is insufficient wealth creation. Just imagine more people competing for a stagnant size of pie.

Unlearn and relearn
It is as important to unlearn a knowledge point you obtained earlier in life as to learn something new. All the knowledges we possess today are learned from our previous experience. However, the underlyings of those experiences might no longer exist or no longer hold. Therefore, the knowledge we generated from past experiences could be useless or even faulty in light of the new reality. To make the best decision, choose the best move, you need to unlearn what you already learned, and relearn given the updated context.

Generalist vs. specialist
I used to worry about not specialising enough but no longer. The risk of specialising in today’s world is that your expertise might become obsolete overnight and all of a sudden you can’t find your place in the new world. By learning a bit of everything, however, you are able to connect the dots and transplant knowledges from one discipline to another. In other words, we call this innovation.
