Back from work on a late summer afternoon, I called a Uber. Looking through the glass at the beautiful sunshine, I said sentimentally: “The last good weekend of the year.” “Hmm, I don’t think so.” The driver responded after slight hesitation. “There will be some more good weekends ahead.” “Well, at least not next week. The weather report said it is going to rain the whole week.” I continued whining. “I try not to let the weather dictate my mood.” The driver said. “It rains because lives on earth needs water to thrive. It is just circle of life.” What an interesting driver, I thought, one with a philosopher’s soul.
The driver’s name is Oliver. The rest of the trip, Oliver went on and on to educate me about the importance of being present in life and not worry about the past or future. Honestly it was only a fifteen minutes ride. But miraculously, his words stayed with me. You know how you read ten books on a subject without feeling anything but then a ten minutes conversation with a stranger suddenly makes you “see”. That was exactly me on that day.
Many days have passed since that beautiful late summer afternoon. The darkness and rain have arrived again. But strangely, they can’t affect me any more. I am as happy on a rainy day as on a sunny day. I am genuinely joyful and I focus on what I need to achieve on the day.
Everyday is a good day. “Live” every moment and the future will follow.
