I have friends who do not know the latest top hits, do not watch sports and have no idea what TML is. I am exactly the opposite. I am keenly interested in pop culture and strive to catch the latest vibes. God, please help these people. I used to think. However, what these people share in common is that they are focusing on “do” their own thing rather than absorb what is already out there. One of my friends is very into piano, I mean, very. The one thing she won’t miss out for the world is her weekly piano lesson. Currently she is with Juilliard School Evening division. I won’t be surprised if one day she will host a personal concert. According to her, creating your own music is so much more interesting than listening to others’ music. I have another friend who is an amateur chef. Instead of restaurant hopping, she is more interested in creating her own recipe and making delicious dishes for friends and family.
I used to think consumption brings pleasure. Dining out, shopping, going to beach resort, etc. etc. However, increasingly, I feel that consumption only brings fleeting pleasure. After that short-lived happiness, it is the eternal void. To fill the emptiness, soon you will need to consume again. So on so forth.
The truly happy people are those who create. Those who are not satisfied with the convenient and abundant choices that are in front of them. But rather, they gain fulfillment from creating their own things.
But seriously, in the end of the day, what defines you is not what you have consumed, but what you have built. If there is one thing I would like to change this year. This would be it.
